Helipads and Hospitals with Pacific Sheet Metal

Carbondale, CO – Pacific Sheet Metal specializes in roof installations and HVAC for commercial and high-end residential buildings. The third generation family-owned business originated as an HVAC service, but the surrounding community slowly convinced the company to enter roofing as well. Pacific Sheet Metal’s roofing division has seen rapid growth over the past few years, particularly for flat roofs. Lowell Walter explained to us that freeze thaw is a major issue in Colorado, as temperatures can fluctuate significantly in short periods of time. If water penetrates a roofing system, it is likely to cause damage as it freezes and expands. A reliable membrane is very important. Pacific Sheet Metal is presently installing a Sika Roofing System on the Aspen Hospital. Jesse Beaudette from Haselden Construction, the general contractor, showed us around this major project.

The project is currently in phase 3, which includes a new emergency department, an intensive care unit, operating rooms, and testing labs. Also, this phase includes a new helipad directly over the new operating room. The roof below the helipad has been covered by a Sarnafil membrane to protect the roof and the operating room below it. The helipad is equipped with a heating system to clear off snow during an emergency. The Sarnafil Roofing System will prevent this rush of melted snow from entering the building. Stephen Selby, Director of Facilities Management for the hospital, explained that each time a helicopter takes a patient to another hospital, either in Denver or Grand Junction, it is to save the patient’s life. It is used around 50 times per year to transport patients with stabilized head injuries or other ailments that require immediate attention. The reliable roofing system will help the helipad remain functional and prepared for emergencies.

The Aspen Hospital is Pacific Sheet Metal’s largest project using a Sika Roofing System yet. Originally built as an inpatient facility, the hospital has since added more personnel to handle outpatient care as well. The hospital is almost tripling is size, going from 77,000 square feet to 219,000 square feet, making it one of the biggest construction projects ever in the area. By 2018 when the total expansion is completed, Pacific Sheet Metal will have covered the entire hospital with a Sika Roofing System. After seeing the Aspen Hospital and learning about the expansion I’ll have to try skiing the Aspen Highland bowl next time I’m in town. There is a great hospital nearby in case anything goes wrong.

An other great place to work!
