Fall River, MA – Amazon.com is the largest internet-based retailer in the world. While Amazon began selling only books online, it now supplies an incredible range of consumer goods. To house its entire inventory, the company has over 100 Amazon Fulfillment Centers in the United States. Employees and robots process orders in these centers using an automated inventory control system. Because of the efficiency of this process, Amazon has the ability to deliver packages in under an hour in some areas. Amazon is opening a 1.2 million square foot center in Fall River, Massachusetts to meet the region’s demand. Redi-Mix Services, Inc. based out of Taunton, Massachusetts supplied the massive facility with concrete using Sika’s concrete admixtures.
Nearly 30,000 cubic yards of concrete were provided for the Amazon Fulfillment Center. This concrete covered the facility’s 1.2 million square foot foundation and 200,000 square foot mezzanine. Because robots are used in the facility, it was important for the concrete to have a level, smooth finish. The concrete incorporated several Sika’s concrete admixtures, including Sikament 686 high-range water reducing admixture. The Sikament 686 was particularly useful in providing the necessary strength for the mezzanine’s four inch pour. In addition to being very large, this project was also completed in a short amount of time. Amazon only began clearing the land for this facility last October. Although it was Redi-Mix Services largest project to date, the accelerated project was very successful. In one particularly ambitious day, Redi-Mix Services supplied 2,000 cubic yards of concrete. However, despite the fast pace not a single batch of concrete was rejected throughout the project.
Aside from the benefits to the construction industry, the new Amazon Fulfillment Center will provide economic benefits to the surrounding community. The facility will provide 900 jobs for the area, as well as significant tax contributions. Amazon is known for being efficient and fast-paced, and this successful project was no exception.
